O’s Place Review of Ro, October ’06

O’s Notes: Guitarist Nick Russo surrounds himself with some excellent musicians including Ari Hoenig (d), Art Hirahara (p), Mark Turner (ts) and Miles Griffith (vocals). They play nine of Nick’s compositions for a cool, neobop set. There is a lot of syncopation and the use of the Fender Rhodes adds character. “Ro” is an excellent track that features the voice of Griffith. It borders on hysterics but he’s always in control and on key. Nick and Mark also take solos that are notable. It is Russo’s date and he has a fine performance on guitar but also makes great use of his band leading to a very good set.
